Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) Training in Weare, New Hampshire

Stick, Knife, Sword & Flexible Weapons Training with Brewster Arnis Grand Master Peter Freedman

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) encompasses Arnis, which is also known as Kali/ Escrima and is the national martial arts of the Philipines. It’s a fast paced class focused primarily on fighting with rattan (wooden) sticks as well as an extensive variety of edge weapons including attention on knife frighting and defense. You’ll love the repetition and fast paced training in these sessions, which is a great aerobic activity and an extremely practical way to round out your martial arts training.

Carrying on the Legacy of GM George H. Brewster

I had the privilege to train in the Arnis combative system with renowned Guru Grande George H. Brewster. A D-Day and Battle of the Bulge veteran, GM Brewster perfected the system with the Brewster Arnis method.  In 2000, GM Brewster named me the new Grand Master of the Boston Arnis Club. I am honored to carry on his legacy—teaching a form of self-protection that integrates physical, psychological, and emotional aspects.

Filipino martial arts (FMA)—also known as Arnis or Escrima—is a comprehensive martial arts system that originated in the Philippines. It encompasses both armed and unarmed combat techniques, making it a highly practical and effective self-defense system. One of the distinguishing features of Arnis/Eskrima is its concept of "flow" or "flowing drills." Practitioners engage in partner drills where they exchange strikes, blocks, and counters in a continuous and fluid manner. This fosters reflexes, coordination, and sensitivity to an opponent's movements.

In addition to weapon training, FMA also includes empty-hand techniques known as "Dumog" or "Panantukan." These techniques involve close-quarters combat, joint locks, strikes, grappling, and controlling techniques.

Enhanced Physical Fitness:

FMA training is a dynamic and physically demanding martial art. A full-body workout, FMA develops your strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. Consistent FMA training will significantly boost your overall fitness level.

Increased Mental Focus & Discipline:

FMA requires mental agility, quick decision-making, and adaptability. Through consistent training, you will enhance your mental focus, concentration, and situational awareness. FMA cultivates discipline as you learn techniques, follow instructions, and persevere through challenges. These qualities extend beyond the training mat and positively impact other areas of your life.

Improved Coordination & Reflexes:

FMA training involves intricate footwork, hand-eye coordination, and timing. Practicing these techniques enhances your coordination, reflexes, and proprioception (awareness of your body in space). As a result, you become more agile and enhance your motor skills.

Engaging in intense physical activity like FMA training is an excellent way to reduce stress and improve your mental well-being. Focusing on training techniques and physical movements helps clear your mind, release tension, and promote relaxation. FMA serves as a healthy outlet for managing stress and improving your overall mood.

Improved Mind-Body Connection:

FMA training emphasizes the integration of body and mind. As you practice techniques, you learn how to synchronize your movements, improve your breath control, and sharpen your mental focus.
