Japanese Jujutsu Versus Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

While Japanese Jujutsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu have similarities, there are distinct differences between these two martial arts forms.

Jujutsu (Japanese Jiu-Jitsu)

Jujutsu originated in medieval Japan (1185 to 1603) as a collection of real-life combat techniques. It evolved among the warrior class (samurai) from about the 17th century.

Jujutsu's many fighting systems involve striking, kicking, kneeing, throwing, bone breaking, joint manipulation, choking techniques, immobilizing holds, and the use of certain weapons. As a modern self-defense strategy, jujutsu's principal purpose is to take down an antagonist, using an opponent's energy against them, redirecting attacks, and applying precise techniques.  Jujutsu incorporates both striking and emphasizes self-defense and control. For these reasons, jujutsu training is ideal for military and police personnel and those who are serious about self-defense.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces its roots back to Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese Jujutsu master who emigrated to Brazil in the early 20th century. The art was further developed by the Gracie family in Brazil. It focuses primarily on ground fighting and submission holds, with an emphasis on leveraging technique and body positioning to overcome larger and stronger opponents.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has gained worldwide popularity as a competitive sport, with a focus on submission grappling. Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitions and tournaments take place on a mat, and participants compete to submit their opponents using chokes, joint locks, or positional control.
